The first General meeting of Northwest Junior Pipe Band members and families since announcing plans to attend Scotland had remarkable attendance, and overwhelming support was shown for the band’s planned trip to the World Pipe Band Championships in 2008. More than 90% of the current beginners, Grade 5 and Grade 4 band members signed up to travel with the band. A few were unable to attend the meeting, but the vast majortiy of NWJPB’s 35 members (plus at least two new members) showed up to discuss travel to the Worlds in 2008.
Commitments will be made with deposits in August. Band members will have one final opportunity 90 days before travelling to withdraw (or add) their commitment. A vote was taken at the general meeting and it was overwhelmingly approved to proceed with plans to compete in Glasgow, Scotland in August of 2008 at the World Pipe Band Championships.
Members are encouraged to expect more performances than in previous years, car-washes, a new planned auction and dinner in October, 2007, as well as asked to support the band’s merchandising and online shopping opportunities available on www.nwjpb.org/merch, including Giveline, an online store created for the community-minded shopper, offering more than a million bestselling products including books, movies, music, electronics, housewares, gifts and more. Every purchase generates a substantial donation to Northwest Junior Pipe Band – an  average of 16% of store sales, sometimes as high as 33%. Giveline has great products, great service, and great prices – the only difference between Giveline and other major online retailers is that every purchase earns money for our organization. Check it out today, and if you decide to buy, remember that NWJPB will earn significant funds in support of our Scotland goal!”
57 band members and family members expressed their intention to travel as a group next year, paying what they are able if the band funding drive falls short of the enormous costs. The fundraising will be critical to support several members who would otherwise be unable to afford the trip. The band estimates the cost of travel for 30 band members and instructors at $62,500.00. The band watched the video advertising the World Championships for 2006 posted on www.gotoglasgow.com. Many raised excellent questions, and more research and volunteerism will be required to achieve the band’s now common goal.
Full notes of the PowerPoint presentation are available to all band members. Final notes including the questions and answers from the discussion will be added and reviewed at the NWJPB Board of Directors’ May meeting, then distributed to band members as requested.
