Insider Information for the Northwest Junior Pipe Band
Posted by Todd Schiele in Practices and Workshops

John Scullion is one of the premier Scottish Drumming instructors, performers and leaders anywhere in the world. He’s coming to town in February for Masters of Scottish Arts Concert and Winter School (a highly recommended event), and we’ve managed to snag him for some of his time in the area. NWJPB is funding a portion of the cost of a three hour drumming workshop.

John’s time is in great demand from other pipe bands, the MSA organization and other programs, so the only time we’ve been able to confirm so far with John is Thursday night, February 8th, we’ll cancel drumming practice (only drumming practice though) and hold the workshop from 6 to 9 PM. All NWJPB Drummers, beginners and students are encouraged to attend. Participants will receive a preview edition of John Scullion’s upcoming book, “a Fairly Together Programme”, and the fee will go directly to John, to offset the publishing costs of this exciting new book for drummers of all skill levels.

This is a site maintained by Kenneth Hiner, of the Wolf River Pipes and Drums from the “Mid-South” area, Tennessee.

This site has several current / recent video links of Winter Storm solo tenor drumming competitions, The Pacific Northwest Highland Games, and various other competitions.

Also, “How to tie tenor strings”

Finally, he’s trying to coordinate a “common language” for Flourishing moves.

We’ll be selling concert tickets via paypal soon, but in the interim, we’re also accepting donations using the same service.  I’m testing the service below, but you can start using it now if you like!  Note that paypal transactions cost a minimum of .30 per transaction plus 1% or so.

Northwest Junior Pipe Band members and instructors entered nine events at the first WPA mini competition of the season, and placed in EVERY event! WPA set a record for the most competitors at an event in recent years with over 40 competitors. It turned the day into a little bit longer than we expect, but it was very exciting to see so many pipers and drummers at these competitions. The WPA president, Don Davidson and Vice President Laurie McKenzie also announced they will be stepping down after this year’s season and are actively recruiting new leadership for Washington Pipers Association. As ever, they need volunteers for all types of work, see their newsletter here>> for details. NWJPB Fielded FIFTEEN competitors (which is probably also a record), and two of our instructors competed as well.

It’s interesting to note that we had 8 drummers show up to compete at WPA…just a few years ago we only had 6 or 7 MEMBERS in the whole band!

Piping Judge David Hilder Pipe Major of last year’s World Champion RMM2, Andre Tessier, Lead Drummer form last year’s World Champ RMM2, and Annie Head (also from last year’s Grade 2 World Champion band) were the adjudicators.
